Whether you’re active, have special needs, or in search of a destination that’s fun for the whole family, there’s something out there for you within America’s borders. This list covers a few of the top entertainment destinations for senior travel out there, ranging from the ever-popular shows and museums in Branson to breathtaking views of nature in some of America’s best national parks. It’s never too late to explore the beauty and wonder that the U.S. has to offer, so why not start planning your trip now?

1. Branson, Missouri

Branson is arguably America’s top travel destination for seniors. With more than 50 music and movie theaters and more than 10 championship golf courses, Branson boasts entertainment options for just about everyone. If you’re taking grandkids with you, go in the warmer months-they’ll enjoy the city’s water parks and water rides. Museum highlights include Dick Clark’s American Bandstand museum (featuring classic cars and other nostalgic exhibits), a Hollywood Wax Museum, the Titanic Museum, and a museum filled with antique toys. If you’re active, Branson is a great place to walk around-there are tons of attractions to catch your attention, and the town is small enough to seem quaint and friendly.

2. Jersey Shore

Spend your vacation on the boardwalk and the beach at any of New Jersey’s towns on the shore. Hotels can eat away a lot of the costs of a trip to the beach, but Ocean City and other Jersey towns have a wide selection of vacation rentals that you can snag for a fraction of a hotel’s cost. Lots of rentals are fully equipped with kitchens, too, so if you have special dietary needs, you can prepare your own food as needed. The sand and sun in Jersey is a perfect getaway for seniors who love to relax and hear the waves lapping in the distance. Jersey Shore definitely makes our list of the top senior travel destinations.

3. Your Local National Park

That’s right! Lace up your hiking boots and pack your camping stove, because national parks have senior discounts that are too good to pass up. Traveling to a national park is a great way to take a meaningful vacation that you’ll be able to remember even without any kitschy souvenirs. If you want gentle exercise, walk and hike the trails that the U.S.’s many parks have to offer.

4. Portland, Oregon

Portland is a fantastic place for active, progressive seniors to visit. The city has miles upon miles of public bike lanes, and its other public transportation, ranging from buses to the light rail, is top-notch. Visiting seniors should bring umbrellas, as the city gets a lot of rain, but its temperate climate means that almost any time of year will make for a great visit. Sometimes called “The City of Roses,” Portland is known for its photogenic neighborhoods with beautiful rose gardens. Parks and open spaces are easy to find, so this city is very accommodating for seniors who enjoy relaxing walks and sightseeing.

5. Alaska

America’s largest state may also be one of its most seldom visited, but that shouldn’t be the case for seniors. No matter what you like, you’ll be able to find a place in Alaska that caters to you. There’s almost no state better for hunting, fishing, and other nature-oriented activities, and Alaska’s cities boast interesting shops and some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Alaska should be on everyone’s list as one of the top senior travel destinations.

Retirement and travel seems to go hand in hand for many new retirees. However, a lot of people who are excited to travel don’t fully realize that their spending on a retirement budget is much different than their spending when they worked, and therefore affects their travel budget.

Retirement spending is a part of a completely different mindset than you’ve had for your entire life. Retirement and traveling can work; you just need to know how to travel on a retirement budget.

To get the most out of your trip (both monetarily and pleasurably), seniors need to remember to budget correctly with the major components of travel.

Transportation
In addition to remembering that your muscles and joints aren’t young (and therefore need to stretch more when you’re in a plane or car), you also need to remember certain transportation needs when you’re retired. Cities around the world have subway systems, but there are usually huge stairwells that can hurt your joints. Also, make sure you plan ahead and know what kind of transportation the city you are at has and make a budget for it in your retirement spending.

Hotel
Finding a good hotel on a budget is not as hard as it sounds. If you’re going to Europe, there are plenty of websites for cheap, nice hostels in every country and city. There are plenty of hotels (stateside and abroad) that offer amenities to seniors, as long as you call ahead, for no charge. If you need an elevator or extra big numbers on your alarm clock, ask! Hotels are happy to accommodate their retirement traveling patrons.

Type of Tender
Money makes the world go round; literally. In your retirement travel make sure you know what kind of currency you need to use and make sure it is accessible. A lot of the times when traveling abroad, people think it is easiest to convert currency at the airports. However, these places usually have high interest rates. It is much easier to take money directly out of an ATM, or from your American banks sister bank. Also, always try to use traveler’s checks and only bring the bare minimum of your wallet; your license, insurance card, and one credit card (not all of them).

Health and Medicine
U.S. medical insurance is not usually honored outside the states, so definitely review your policy to find out details. Make sure to bring enough medication for the entire trip, as well as a few extra doses to be safe. Over the counter medicines for everyday aches and pains can be found cheap in airports, but it always more financially savvy to bring those kinds of meds from home.

Bargains
A little research can go a long way. Retirement traveling is perfect because you can go during off-peak times and save money. Also, by traveling during the week you can help save your retirement spending while also avoiding crowds.

Heart disease becomes a heart attack or slowed mental functions turn into Alzheimer’s disease. If you want to avoid running into these types of problems then it is important that you take good care of your body no matter what age you are. The types of things you do now can make all the difference in the quality of your senior health when that time in your life rolls around.

Achieve a healthy weight – Of all the things you can do to protect your senior health, losing weight tops the list. There is a long list of problems that occur from carrying around too many pounds. They range in severity from being afflicted with arthritis in the knees to developing a chronic disease such as diabetes and heart failure. This adds up to a poor quality of life as well as increased medical costs. Losing weight improves your overall health as well as decreases your risk of manifesting serious diseases such as cancer and some brain disorders.

Get regular exercise – Exercise improves both physical and mental conditioning. One of the leading theories as to why people develop diseases in the joints and bones is because of chronic disuse. Doing things like walking, simple stretching exercise, and light weight training can go a long way towards keeping the body limber and strong. Mental exercise is equally important for maintaining and even improving your mental faculties. Challenging your mind with puzzles, logic games, or learning another language can keep the mind elastic and help stave off degenerative neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia that can harm your senior health.

Stay active – Sadly, suicide is high amongst people at retirement age. One theory for this is that when the job goes so does the person’s reason for living. They have a hard time adjusting to the slower and seemingly purposeless life of retirement. To protect your emotional senior health, take time to develop hobbies and relationships outside of your job. These things will sustain you when you finally make the transition from full time employee to retiree. If you are already retired, then find ways to be social. Volunteer, start a home business, or join a travel club. When you are busy, you won’t have time to feel lonely.

Although many facilities have improved access for senior travelers and the handicapped in the United States, that may not be true in other parts of the world. Cruise lines have become popular among seniors in recent years as they are an inclusive vacation experience combining food, entertainment, living quarters, and exotic destinations all rolled into one. Ships have been build specifically to cater to this new market of senior travellers.

Seniors discounts are more readily available these days with discounts on all sorts of things from flights to cruises to train and bus tickets to car rentals and hotels even retaurants are giving discounts. Most senior citizen discounts are available to anyone who is 62 years old or over. The internet is chocked full of discounts for seniors and they are using it with increasing confidence to find them.

RVing is popular among seniors and its common to see them driving the highways or hanging out in caravan parks with other like-minded seniors. Some longer termers even take on part-time jobs as caravan park helpers. Sometimes seniors will spend their winter months down south in trailer parks. These ones are called snowbirds. Recreational vehicles (rvs) are a lot more manageable these days with a lot of amenities in a more manageable vehicle. This is a popular escape for seniors who long to have some freedom after raising their families.

Adventure travel is a growing segment of the travel industry and seniors are eager to take part. They might not be as nimble as their younger counterparts but they’re willing to give it a go. Walking and cycling are both popular activities that can be done all over the world.

A more extreme variation of adventure travel is volunteering on disaster-relief missions to foreign countries, where retired medical personnel can lend a welcome hand. Some seniors have joined the peace corps and have been sent to underdeveloped countries to help build schools and teach in them.

Holidays to study something or learn a new skill are an excellent choice for seniors. Anything you can think of is possible: learn a new language, how to play african drums, go on a yoga retreat, learn to cook thai food, study meditation… you can find whatever interests you anywhere in the world.
